New Beginnings

“The secret to living the life of your dreams is to start living the life of your dreams today, in every little way you possibly can.” – Mike Dooley

A new day, a new school, a new job, a new hobby, a new start – everyone has recently experienced something new for the first time in their life. With a new beginning anything can happen, especially when least expected. Often leaving us overwhelmed, anxious, terrified, or even excited all at the same time. Making changes can be difficult, because we don’t really know where they start. But that’s the best part; there are an infinite amount of possibilities. There is no exact formula as to where to start, thus leaving us with the opportunity to explore the different options. Throughout the whole process it is important to remember a few key things.

First and foremost, it is important to remember Bhagwan along the way. Without the blessings of God we would not be where we are today. Although mornings can be hectic, especially when we are still establishing new routines, it is important to take a few minutes to do darshan, pray, and if possible do Aarti once a day to thank God for everything we have had a chance to experience.

Secondly, remember that new beginnings are just that—a new start. It is important to put the past behind you and focus on the future. This doesn’t mean forgetting where you come from, but rather learning from it all. Nobody can give you wiser advice than yourself. No one has experienced life the same way you have, and nobody can tell you what to do and when to do it. Instead of seeking approval of others we need to seek approval of ourselves. When we approve of our actions, we know that our actions are in sync with our thoughts, beliefs and values—this is the secret formula to being happy in your life.  When our actions are driven by our values, we will no longer seek external validation or get bogged down by what others may think.

It is also important to stay positive throughout the whole process. New beginnings can be frightening. Think about the last time you were uncertain about something. Our natural reaction is to immediately try and take control of the situation in an attempt to create some sense and order. It is human nature to want the answers to all of our questions and to want to know the imminent future. However, with this mentality years can be wasted just planning what we need to do, but never actually accomplishing our goals and dreams. Instead, try focusing on one step at a time and trusting that each step will lead you to the next. The reality is, sometimes there are no certain answers to the questions running through your head.

Lastly don’t forget there are an abundance of resources out there to help you overcome any situation. If you are starting out at a new school don’t hesitate to go to the advisor’s office and find out everything they have to offer. If you are moving to a new area, get to know some of your neighbors and learn about all the best places to visit and eat. Don’t feel like you are alone just because you are in a new environment and don’t know many people. It is important to keep an open mind and get to know people who are have led a life completely different than you. At the end of the day we are all children of God; everyone has an important message to share and an ounce of knowledge that you may not be able to learn unless you get to know them.

New starts are an opportunity not given to everyone and it is a blessing to be able to experience new things in life. Remember to take things one-step at a time, not forget what is important, and to just take a deep breath.
